Liberal Democrats today respond to a damning report by the District Auditor over the recruitment process for the chief executive post at the county council. Tue 22nd Apr 2008: LIB DEM ACTION PLAN FOR A12 and ESSEX. As Essex County Council holds an inquiry into the A12, Liberal Democrats are looking for an improvement in interim safety & capacity measures. However, paramount is the need for a revised Local Transport Planning Strategy to provide and encourage the use of viable alternative modes of transport. Tue 25th Mar 2008: TORIES INSIST BIGGER POTHOLES ARE GOOD. Conservatives at Essex County Council insist it is good practice to allow potholes to get more than double their present depth before they will be fixed. The Tories rejected a claim by the Liberal Democrat group on the council, that roads are likely to deteriorate under the new strategy. The Lib Dems pushed for a formal meeting to discuss the issue, but the group was eventually voted down by the Conservative members. Tue 19th Feb 2008: TORIES BACK BIGGER POTHOLES POLICY. The Conservative cabinet at Essex County Council has today (19 February) approved a new highways maintenance policy that will see potholes twice as deep and preventative work including drainage, neglected. And if you get an injury by tripping on a footpath or road, you are less likely to be awarded compensation from the council. Tue 12th Feb 2008: INCOMPETENT TORIES STRIPPED OF COVETED 4 STARS. The Conservative administration at Essex County Council has been stripped of its four star council rating a year after being given the status, but has still hiked up council tax. At a meeting of the full council today (12 February) to debate the council's budget, Conservatives voted to raise council tax by 4.2%, which is considerably above the average pay rise achieved by taxpayers. Fri 8th Feb 2008: 77 ESSEX PRIMARY SCHOOLS UNDER THREAT OF CLOSURE. A new government directive could see the closure of seventy seven schools across Essex according to figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats. The recent Government directive sent to local authorities, made clear that councils would only get extra money for new primary schools if they had decisive plans to ensure that no school has more than a quarter surplus places. Wed 23rd Jan 2008: COMPETITION LAUNCHED TO FIND WORST POTHOLE. Liberal Democrats have launched a competition to find the worst pothole after Tue 22nd Jan 2008: IT'S CONFIRMED - TORIES TOPSY-TURVEY ON WASTE. Conservatives at Essex County Council have set recycling targets that are vague and lack ambition. That is one of the findings of an independent Waste Commission hired by the council to review its waste strategy. Thu 10th Jan 2008: TORIES PROPOSE SLASHING POTHOLES MAINTENANCE. Proposed changes to Essex County Council's highways maintenance strategy, will mean that people in Essex will have to get used to bigger potholes being around for longer, as the ruling Conservative party fail to balance its funding of road maintenance. The proposals come just weeks after the Conservatives announced a £10m overspend on the highways budget. Liberal Democrats have expressed renewed anger over the level of government funding for county council services at yesterday's key Policy and Resources Panel. Wed 5th Dec 2007: Let's kick the habit and make Suffolk plastic bag free by 2010 . Liberal Democrats today announced proposals to get Suffolk to "kick the habit" of using plastic bags and make Suffolk plastic bag free by 2010. In a motion to Suffolk County Council's Full Council meeting on 13th December, Liberal Democrats will propose that the county council takes the lead in persuading both retailers and consumers that Suffolk should be free of plastic bags by 2010. Tue 4th Dec 2007: LIB DEM SECURITY FEARS FOR NEW CHILDREN'S DATABASE. Liberal Democrats fear that confidential details of every child in Essex to be held on a council database, will not be secure enough in the light of the government's recent loss of 25m pieces of personal information. Councillors at Essex County Council today (4 December) have now agreed to undertake regular reviews of the system. Thu 22nd Nov 2007: EVERY CHILD IS EQUAL..BUT THE GOVERNMENT'S CHILDREN ARE MORE EQUAL THAN YOURS. Personal details on every child in Essex including their name, date of birth, school, GP and parent's contact details, will be collected and stored on a government database - except the children of politicians and the rich and famous who are explicitly excluded. Liberal Democrats at Essex County Council have called for a full council debate on this project, named ContactPoint, which the group says is an unnecessary intrusion into the privacy of many children and their parents. Fri 16th Nov 2007: TORIES GO WOBBLY ON COUNCIL TAX. Liberal Democrats at Essex County Council have been left baffled following Conservative leader David Cameron's plans to support council tax, as the Conservative group at the council recently supported a Lib Dem motion criticising the tax.
